Pilates teachers consistently tell me that the main thing holding them back in their career is lack of confidence and imposter syndrome.
I think the MAJORITY of people struggle with lack of confidence, me included.
And I KNOW the majority of people struggle with imposter syndrome because research shows it.
One of my favorite books is Presence by Amy Cuddy. In it, Amy shares how she once asked a room full of high-level executives how many of them struggle with imposter syndrome. She said almost everyone raised their hand.
🟣 Lack of confidence and imposter syndrome go hand in hand. But if you can gain self-confidence, then imposter syndrome tends to ease up.
In the decades that I have been studying self-confidence, and what it has to do with teaching, I have tried A LOT of things.
Positive Affirmations, Journaling, Meditation, Religion
And after all of that, this is the #1 thing that I've found is crucial in healthy self-esteem:
❌ Stop shaming yourself for past mistakes, perceived failures, and rejections in your life.
Apparently we hold on to the past to protect ourselves from future hurt.
But OMG does it hinder the potential of your future!! 🔮
Here's Some Evidence to Support This
When we dwell on past mistakes and rejections subjectively (with our feelings), shame is the result.
Do this instead:
✅ Focus on the present AND and an EXCITING future 🔮.
Look at the past objectively (without all the feelings; outside of yourself). Learn from it by asking "what can I do differently next time."
The BIGGEST LIE we have been told is that people don't change. If you stay stuck in the past, FOR SURE you don't change.
💫 When you look to the future in optimistic ways; BEing a person you can be proud of through micro-changes in your moment by moment habits, positive change is inevitable.
🩵 So, the next time you catch yourself in a down mood -
➣ Now, if you don't have a very exciting future planned, that's a WHOLE other topic. But it's very important to have for the 'stop dwelling on the past' trick to work.
🟣 Here's an exercise to help you discover an exciting future. I encourage you to write down your answers.
1. If Pilates is your career of choice, Why did you choose Pilates?
2. What population of people lights you up when you're working with them (or if you haven't worked with them yet, who would you like to work with)?
3. Thinking COMPLETELY outside of the box, if you could do ANYTHING with your Pilates education, and money wasn't an issue, what would you use your education for to make this world (or the community you live in) a better place?
4. What are you currently doing that is moving you towards that vision?
Bonus: Where would you like to be in 1 year? 3 Years? 7 Years?
➢ Your story is not written. You are writing it now with every choice you make! And you can change that story any time!
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to know your answers, if you're open to sharing them!
DM me on Instagram and share your exciting future with me!
